'Smarter Ways Forward' report
These small scale measures such as car sharing, car clubs, conferencing, travel planning and flexible working have a very high rate of financial return and go to the core of sustainable transport policy – reducing the need to travel.
In June this year, we published a report,
'Smarter Ways Forward' showing how small-scale, local transport measures can reduce congestion and emissions; and at the beginning of this year we co-hosted a conference on Car Clubs,
'Using Car Clubs to create more sustainable towns & cities'
'Smarter Ways Forward' concluded that whilst there is already considerable activity across Scotland in implementing 'Smarter Choices' measures, there is a clear need for greater support and guidance from central, regional and local government.
Amongst other things, the report found that Smarter Choices are popular across Scottish local authorities, and in rural as well as urban areas. However, measures with a ready framework for implementation (e.g. car sharing schemes) or which received central government funding (workplace travel plans & school travel plans) are most popular.
